Dangers of Chemical Drain Cleaning Solutions

La Grange PlumberThe first thing that many homeowners do when they experience a clogged drain is to run to the store and purchase some chemical drain cleaner. These products are advertised to quickly and inexpensively unclog the pipes and restore the flow of water once again.

What many homeowners are not aware of is the ingredients in those cleaners are extremely toxic, and if left in the drains too long can bring with them a variety of dangerous consequences.

The Poor Air Quality

Many clogs in the drains are a result of neglect for years, and pouring a liquid drain cleaner into the pipes will have little if not effect on the issue. What will happen though, the toxic chemical will now be trapped in the pipes and the fumes will slowly make their way up and into the indoor air.

Once the fumes are released into the air, it can be extremely dangerous for young children and pets to inhale. The toxic ingredients in these drain cleaners are designed to quickly flush down the drain, and if released into the house can have serious consequences. Inhaling the fumes overnight can cause dizziness and then more serious illnesses.

Destroying the Fixture Finish

Many sink fixtures have a highly polished chrome finish, and many chemicals can cause the finish to become destroyed. If pouring the drain cleaner into the sink and some spaces on to these fixtures, it can instantly damage the fine chrome finish permanently. One issue many homeowners experience is if the pipes are clogged back into the sink, and standing water is in the sink, they pour the drain cleaner right into the sink anyway. That results in a large splash, and usually anything highly polished will become damaged instantly.

Destroying the Plumbing from Inside

In ideal situations, the drain cleaner would flow down the pipes like in the commercial, quickly breaking up the small clog and restoring the flow of water. What happens in most cases is the toxic drain cleaner remains trapped in the pipe with the clog, and starts to break down the integrity of the pipe lining. The longer these toxic drain cleaners are used, the more damage is being done without the homeowner even being aware of it.

The cleaner can weaker seams in joints, and actually result in more leaks throughout the plumbing system.
